problem statement...

The client has requested a modern, open house that would have minimal impact on its wooded site. The site features sloping topography, an elegant maple tree, and a small creek along the north-east boundary. The client has asked for morning sun, open views, and the use of sustainable concepts.

our design purpose...

The scheme is composed of two pieces: one long, narrow piece projecting half of itself out over the hill towards a creek and maple below, and the second, a low element running parallel with the topography and intersecting with the first to create a dynamic space. Each bar houses a bed room on the end and begins to turn into public space as it intersects with the other, culminating in a dramatic living room that projects out over the sloping site below. The L-shaped footprint creates an intimate courtyard that will have a pool and room for outdoor entertainment that can spill out directly from the kitchen and living room. The dining room can be opened to extend dinner out onto the porch on nice nights.

The scheme features broad roof overhangs on the southern side to shelter the house from the summer sun. These overhangs keep the interior cool in the summer while simultaneously allowing northern light to filter into the space. The client gets a different, yet spectacular view of the site from each room, whether it is out towards the creek below, into the lovely woodlands, or over a small field opening near the house. The natural feel of the sight is brought right into the design, giving the space a true feeling of outdoor living.
