This is a phased project we began in early 2003 with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Currently we are in the first phase of the project which consists of the site’s master plan, Open Air Pavilion design and construction, wetland construction, a flood plain arboretum, and restoration of the site’s native piedmont prairie. The second phase will begin late 2004 when we will further develop the master plan and finish the construction documents for a 40-student residential dorm, a large meeting hall/classroom, a wet lab, housing for a visiting researcher, and site exhibits.

project statment...

The Prairie Ridge of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will be an experiential center focusing on North Carolina’s environment. The diverse 38-acre site will be a living classroom for school groups, educators, and learners of all ages to visit for a day trip or a unique overnight field trip. As an outreach program of the museum this center will foster an appreciation for the state’s natural resources and natural diversity for all of its visitors.

progress...

Phase 1, the Open Air Pavilion, is finishing up. The building will have it's grand opening in mid October. Excavation for the 1 acre pond will begin in the next few weeks. Design Development is on going for the dorm building, meeting hall and kitchen, wetlabs, and caretakers suite.
